Q-1: What insurance information is necessary for my insured under the UIIA?
A-1: The basic insurance requirements of the UIIA are as follows:
1. Auto liability policy for $1 million combined single limit covering any or scheduled/hired autos.
2. A commercial general liability policy for $1 million per occurrence.
3. The UIIE-1, CA23-17, TE23-17B endorsement must be made part of the auto policy.
4. The Equipment Providers that your insured does business with must be named additional insured on the auto liability. Please note that Equipment Providers may also require to be named additional insured on general liability and trailer interchange as well.
5. Other insurance requirements (ie. cargo, trailer interchange, workers compensation/employers liability) may be required by individual Equipment Providers.

Q-2: Do I need to provide a certificate for each Equipment Provider my insured does business with?
A-2: We encourage all insurance agents to register to submit insurance online at www.uiia.org/tcs/ia_login.shtml by clicking on New Member. After registering, you will receive an e-mail with your Account Number and Password. You will also need to obtain your insured’s SCAC Code and IA Password before you can submit insurance on their behalf. Online registration provides you with 24/7 access to your insured’s account to quickly and easily provide the UIIA with updated information. You can download the online user guide at www.uiia.org/userguide/ia/iahelp_1.php.
If you will be faxing the information, we suggest you download the Insurance Instructions and utilize the UIIA Acord 22 Form.
Q-3: Does the UIIA need to be named additional insured?
A-3: No, the UIIA is only the certificate holder and does not need to be named additional insured. The Equipment Providers with whom your insured is going to do business under the UIIA are the parties that require to be named additional insured on the appropriate policies.
Q-4: What is the UIIE-1, CA23-17 or TE23-17B endorsement?
A-4: The UIIE-1, CA23-17 and TE23-17B endorsement is the Truckers Uniform Intermodal Interchange Endorsement. This is a hold harmless endorsement and is required to be part of the motor carrier’s auto liability policy. Any of the above endorsement forms are acceptable, however the endorsement must be the current version of the form. Insurance agents can provide either the actual signed endorsement or state on the certificate of insurance that one of the above acceptable endorsements is part of the auto policy. Please note if more than one auto policy is provided on the certificate, this endorsement must be endorsed to all the policies.
Q-5: How should the certificate holder be shown if the certificate will be faxed to the UIIA office?
A-5: The certificate holder should be shown as follows:
| President | UIIA | |
| Intermodal Association of North America | or | 11785 Beltsville Drive, Suite 1100 |
| 11785 Beltsville Drive, Suite 1100 | Calverton, MD 20705-4048 | |
| Calverton, MD 20705-4048 |
Q-6: What is trailer interchange coverage?
A-6: Trailer interchange is a type of insurance coverage that many Equipment Providers require. Should your insured want to do business with these companies, you will need to include trailer interchange on the certificate of insurance provided on behalf of your insured. The trailer interchange policy needs to cover the physical damage to non-owned equipment (containers, chassis and/or trailers) while in your insured’s care, custody and/or control. Please note trailer interchange must cover comprehensive and collision. Policies covering only fire and theft are not acceptable. Click here for more information on Trailer Interchange.
Q-7: If I reference specific endorsements on the certificate of insurance, do I need to include actual copies of these documents with the certificate?
A-7: References to specific insurance endorsements on the certificate of insurance, other than the UIIE-1, CA23-17, or TE23-17B, must be included when submitting the certificate of insurance. Copies of these documents are requested to ensure that they do not exclude or negate any of the coverage being required under the UIIA.
Q-8: How long does it take for my insured’s account to be updated once I provided the certificate of insurance?
A-8: If information is submitted on-line it will be processed immediately unless the information has an adverse impact on the insured’s account. In this case, a notice will be sent to the insured and to the agent. The certificate will be held under “Bad Certs” in the application until 11:59pm. If no new information is submitted prior to this, the certificate will then be applied by our overnight job.
Certs that are faxed to our office are entered as quickly as possible. Any renewals received for expiring policies for that day are entered by close of business. All other insurance information received is entered within 24 hours of receipt.
Q-9: Can I access my insured’s account online?
A-9: Yes, insurance agents may access their insured’s account on-line if they are register to be an authorized agent on the UIIA website at http://www.uiia.org/tcs/ia_login.shtml by clicking on New Member. The agent will also need to contact their insured to obtain their SCAC Code and IA password that is provided to the MotorCarrier for their agent.
Q-10: How do I sign up to submit insurance online?
A-10: Agents are encouraged to pre-register for the new on-line submission of insurance feature now. You can do so by going to the UIIA homepage at www.uiia.org and clicking on the link for Pre-Register for UIIA On-Line Access and completing the registration form. Once you submit the registration form, you will receive an e-mail providing you with a user name and password. Please note that you will need your insured to provide you with their IA Access Code and the Motor Carrier’s SCAC Code in order access your insured’s account the initial time. After this the account will be linked to your agency when you log in.
Q-11: On the expiration date of a policy, what exact “time” does the policy actually expire in the UIIA’s system?
A-11: The UIIA system is setup to expire insurance policies at 12:01 a.m. of the day of the expiration date which often causes confusion with the Motor Carriers thinking they have coverage until 11:59 p.m. on the expiration date, but in fact the policy expires on the first minute of that day. Therefore, Motor Carriers would need to have their insurance renewal policies sent to our office prior to the expiration date.
In addition, insurance agents should ensure that the effective date of a policy is concurrent with the expiration date of the policy expiring so that there is no lapse between the expiring and renewal/new policy. (i.e. A policy expires 2/1/2009 should have a renewal policy with effective date of 2/1/2009, not 2/2/2009.)
